Brian Del Signore

The World of Percussion

The World of Percussion is a PowerPoint presentation with live instrumental music designed for block time presentation in elementary schools in the Houston, Texas area.  In this program, Houston Symphony Principal Percussionist Brian Del Signore introduces students to percussion instruments from all over the world.

The program begins with a short introduction to the symphony orchestra and the four instrument groups (strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion).  Brian then introduces the students to the idea of searching for  "found" percussion instruments in the world around them, followed by ideas for making instruments.  Percussion instrument demonstrations follow as Brian introduces a wide array of percussion instruments from many countries and cultures worldwide.   Brian and the students travel around the world via onscreen maps visiting the countries where the percussion instruments originated, as the instruments are introduced and demonstrated.

To wind up the program, Brian and the students create a jam session where the students keep time and play rhythms with their hands, while Brian improvises while revisiting the percussion instruments he has brought from around the world.

The length of the program is 35 to 40 minutes tailored to fit block time schedules, but can be lengthened if desired.  The World of Percussion in the 2014-2015 school year has been presented at schools in Clear Creek ISD, Fort Bend ISD and Cy Fair ISD. In the fall of 2016, the program was presented at elementary schools in the Houston Independent School District, with the help of Brian's corporate sponsors: Black Swamp Percussion, Pearl Drums, ProMark Drum Sticks, Remo Corp, and Sabian Cymbals.
